Radon Gas Updates

February 19, 2026 Update

Attention Dunloe Elementary Families and Staff,

As part of our commitment to keeping you informed on each step in the process, we are providing an update on the radon mitigation efforts at Dunloe Elementary.

As previously shared, post-mitigation radon testing took place over the MLK Day weekend (January 17–19) to evaluate the effectiveness of the system installed over winter break. We are pleased to report that all classrooms within the school building tested below the EPA-recommended threshold, confirming that the mitigation system is effectively reducing radon levels in those areas.

However, the gymnasium and an office located within the kitchen area continue to test above the EPA-recommended threshold. While these areas represent a limited portion of the building, we are committed to ensuring safe radon levels throughout 100% of the facility.

We are currently in the process of acquiring and installing an additional mitigation system to specifically address those remaining areas at Dunloe Elementary. Once installation is complete, follow-up testing will occur to confirm that all areas of the building meet safety standards.

We appreciate your continued patience and partnership as we work through this process. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority, and we will continue to provide updates, as promised, as new information becomes available.

January 7, 2026 Update

Attention Dunloe Elementary Families and Staff,

As part of our commitment to keeping you informed throughout each step of the radon mitigation process at Dunloe Elementary, we would like to share an important update.

Over winter break, a radon mitigation system was successfully installed in the building. The system is operating properly and performing as expected at this time.

To confirm how effectively the new system is reducing radon levels, a post-mitigation radon test will take place over the three-day weekend for MLK Day (Jan. 17-19). This test is a critical step in verifying the performance of the newly installed system and ensuring that it is working as designed.

The post test results are expected approximately four weeks after the test is conducted.

We recognize that this is a developing situation, and we are grateful for your patience and partnership as we take the necessary steps to provide the safest possible learning and working environment for our students and staff.

We would also like to recognize Dave Hausmann and Jeff Kreutz in our business services department. These men sacrificed a lot of family time over the long winter break to oversee this project while the work was being done. Thank you, Dave and Jeff, for your dedication to our students!

We will continue to share updates as new information becomes available.

(Coincidentally, January is National Radon Action Month. Find out more here.)

DECEMBER 12, 2025 Update

Attention Dunloe Elementary Families and Staff,

As part of our commitment to keeping you informed on each step in the process, we are providing an update on the radon mitigation efforts at Dunloe Elementary.

On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, the Groveport Madison Schools Board of Education took formal action, approving (3-2 vote) to proceed with permanent radon mitigation at Dunloe Elementary School over winter break. This action allows the district to move forward promptly with the recommended mitigation plan while students and staff are out of the building.

Once mitigation is complete, we will conduct follow-up radon testing at the earliest available window to verify the effectiveness of the system and measure the reduction in radon levels. These post-mitigation tests are a critical part of the process and will help ensure levels fall within recommended safety guidelines.

We will continue implementing the temporary mitigation measures already in place, including increased fresh air circulation and adjusted HVAC settings, until permanent mitigation is completed and follow-up testing confirms the expected improvements.

In addition, during the same December 9 meeting, the Board of Education approved action (3-2 vote) to begin radon testing at all Groveport Madison school buildings starting over winter break and continuing into 2026. This proactive, districtwide approach allows us to identify and address potential concerns early and reinforces our commitment to safe learning environments for all students and staff.

We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available and will share the results of the post-mitigation testing once it is completed. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership in keeping our school community safe and healthy.

November 21, 2025 Update

Attention Dunloe Elementary Families and Staff,

As part of our commitment to keeping you informed on each step in the process, we are providing an update on the radon mitigation efforts at Dunloe Elementary.

Yesterday, we were notified by our certified mitigation specialists that they will be able to provide the necessary resources to begin permanent radon mitigation work over winter break. This timing allows the work to be completed safely and efficiently while students and staff are out of the building.

Once mitigation is complete, we will conduct follow-up radon testing (earliest window of available time) to verify the effectiveness of the system and to measure how much the levels have been reduced. These post-mitigation tests are an important part of the process and will help ensure that radon levels fall within recommended safety guidelines.

We will continue implementing the temporary mitigation steps already in place such as increasing fresh air circulation and maintaining adjusted HVAC settings until permanent mitigation is finished and follow-up testing confirms the expected improvements.

Additionally, as previously shared, the district is proactively expanding radon testing to all Groveport Madison school buildings. This districtwide approach allows us to identify and address any concerns early, ensuring safe learning environments for all students and staff.

We understand that matters involving environmental safety can be concerning, and we remain deeply committed to transparency throughout this process. We appreciate your patience and support as we work closely with environmental experts and the Ohio Department of Health to complete this work as quickly and safely as possible.

We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available and will share the results of the post-mitigation testing once it is completed.

Thank you for your ongoing trust and partnership in keeping our school community safe and healthy.

November 8, 2025 Update

Attention Dunloe Elementary Families and Staff,

As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining safe and healthy learning environments, the district recently conducted radon testing at Dunloe Elementary after a formal concern was raised by a staff member. Results from Dunloe Elementary show that the building registered levels above recommended guidelines.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It is common throughout Ohio and is found in many homes and buildings. Radon has what is known as a dose response relationship. The higher the radon level and the longer period of exposure, the greater the probability of a negative health impact.

Out of an abundance of caution, the district is working closely with certified environmental professionals and the Ohio Department of Health to evaluate and address these results. In alignment with recommendations from the Ohio Department of Health, we are implementing the following temporary mitigation steps immediately:

  • Increasing the flow of fresh air into the building
  • Sealing known exposed areas where radon may enter
  • Slightly lowering the thermostat to help reduce negative air pressure within the building

Additionally, we’ve requested continuous radon monitors to be installed to provide ongoing measurements and ensure that air quality remains closely observed while permanent mitigation systems are implemented.

We have a comprehensive mitigation strategy in place and are currently working with our selected mitigation vendor to determine how quickly this process can begin. Follow-up testing will be conducted to confirm that radon levels return to well within safe ranges once mitigation work is complete.

In addition, the district will continue to take a proactive approach by expanding radon testing to all Groveport Madison school buildings. This will allow us to identify and address any areas of concern before they become larger issues and to ensure safe learning environments districtwide.

We understand that hearing about radon can be concerning, but please know that your child’s safety is our highest priority. We are working in lockstep with the Ohio Department of Health throughout this process, and school will resume as normal on Monday. We will continue to provide updates as this process moves forward to conclusion. In the meantime, visit the Ohio Department of Health’s website to find factual information about radon gas.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work together to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our students and staff.
